I was hired by National Geographic and Mullen to create a mosaic of Houdini using 3,612 Rubik's Cubes. The mosaic was used to promote a new show called Brain Games.
The mosaic and the large frame it was built into was installed in a pop-up shop style display located just a couple blocks south of Times Square. I spent a total of 26 hours over the course of two weeks creating the piece. The imagery contains two optical tricks. Can you see them?
While I'm proud of this piece and all the hard work that went into creating it, this project serves as an important reminder that the final artwork must not be influenced by the client. The final result had a sort-of "billboard" quality that was less engaging to the public than both myself and the client had hoped for.
